Tarifa

Tarifa is one of Europe’s most famous wind and wave spots, located at the southern tip of Spain in Andalusia, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean at the Strait of Gibraltar. It’s best known for its strong, reliable winds rather than big surf, making it a hotspot for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and foiling.

What it’s like

• Wind: Very consistent, often powerful
• Waves: Can range from small beach breaks to punchy swells, depending on the swell direction and wind
• Water: Generally cool, with strong currents in some areas
• Atmosphere: Lively, laid-back surf town with a big international board sports scene

Surf conditions

Tarifa works best when the right swell lines up with either: - Levante: Strong easterly wind, often very gusty and powerful - Poniente: Westerly wind, usually cleaner and more manageable

Because of the wind exposure, many beaches are more suitable for windsports than pure surfing. Still, on the right day, Tarifa and the surrounding coastline can offer fun wave sessions, especially at exposed beaches with Atlantic swell.
