Glencairn Reef

Glencairn Reef is a scenic reef break on the False Bay side of Cape Town, near the small coastal suburb of Glencairn, between Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek. It’s known for its exposed Atlantic/False Bay swell energy, producing a punchy, often fast right-hand wave over reef and boulders.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Reef break, mainly a right-hander
• Power: Can be solid and hollow when swell lines up
• Ride: Often offers a short to medium-length wave with a fairly critical takeoff
• Consistency: Best on the right swell direction and tide; can be fickle

Conditions

• Best swell: Swell from the south/southwest tends to work well
• Best wind: Usually prefers light offshore or clean conditions; stronger winds can make it messy
• Tide: Tide sensitivity is important, with the reef shaping the wave differently at low vs. mid tide
• Skill level: Better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers because of the reef, rocks, and sometimes heavy takeoff
