Clovelly

Clovelly is a scenic, lesser-known surf spot on the False Bay side of Cape Town, near Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay. It’s a small bay with a mix of sand and reef, offering a relatively sheltered setup compared with many of the city’s more exposed Atlantic spots.

Surf characteristics

• Wave type: Mostly soft, mellow waves with occasional more defined peaks.
• Best swell: Works best with a southeast or south-southwest swell.
• Wind: Usually prefers offshore or light northerly winds; strong south-easterlies can damage the quality.
• Wave quality: Often good for beginners and intermediates when conditions are manageable, though it can get fun for shortboarders on better swells.

• Bottom: Mainly sand with some reef/rock influence depending on the section and tide.
• Tide: Can be tide-sensitive; conditions may improve at mid tide.
• Hazards: Watch for rocks, strong currents, and occasional kelp or surf-zone variations.

• Crowds: Generally less crowded than the more famous Cape Town surf breaks.
• Vibe: Quiet, local, and scenic, with a more relaxed False Bay atmosphere.
