Dunes, Sestrorezk

Dunes, Sestroretsk (Finnish Bay, Russia) is a well-known beachbreak / sandbar surf spot on the Gulf of Finland near St. Petersburg. It’s often called “Dunes” because the surf is set along a sandy coastline with shifting banks and dunes, which means the waves can change shape a lot from day to day.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly sand-bottom beachbreak
• Best direction: Usually works best with storm-generated windswell coming across the Finnish Bay
• Wave quality: Can be surprisingly fun when the sandbars line up, but it’s highly inconsistent
• Water: Cold for most of the year, so wetsuit needed even in warmer months
• Bottom: Sandy, which is better than rocks, but the bars can move after storms

Conditions

• The spot depends heavily on wind direction, fetch, and local storms
• Because the Finnish Bay is relatively enclosed, swells are often short-period and wind-driven
• Best surf windows are usually during strong weather systems when the bay picks up enough energy for rideable waves
