Molhe de Ferragudo

Molhe de Ferragudo is a surf spot on the Algarve’s south coast in southern Portugal, near the fishing town of Ferragudo and the mouth of the Arade River, just across from Portimão.

Spot character

• Type: A jetty/point-style break influenced by the harbor and river mouth
• Bottom: Mostly sand, with some rocky sections near the molhe/jetty
• Wave quality: Can produce clean, shaped waves with decent line-up when the swell and tide align
• Crowd level: Often busy when conditions are good, especially because it’s accessible and near town

Best conditions

• Swell: Works best with south to southwest swells
• Wind: Northeast/offshore winds are ideal, which are common on some Algarve mornings
• Tide: Usually mid tide to high tide is safer and more consistent, depending on sand levels and river influence

Wave type

• Can offer longer rides than a typical beach break if the sandbanks set up well
• On smaller days it may be soft and mellow
• On bigger swells it can get strong and punchy, with more power near the structure

Hazards

• Rocks and jetty structure close to the break
• Strong currents near the river mouth and harbor entrance
