Maceda

Maceda is a beachbreak on Portugal’s north coast, just south of Porto in the Ovar area. It’s one of the more consistent surf spots in the region, exposed to Atlantic swell and known for producing fun, punchy waves over a sandy bottom.

What it’s like

• Type: Sand-bottom beachbreak
• Wave quality: Can be very good when conditions line up, with fast, hollow sections at times
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, though smaller days can suit beginners with supervision
• Crowds: Can get busy when the surf is good, especially in summer and on weekends

• Swells: Picks up west and northwest swells well
• Wind: Prefers light offshore or calm winds; onshore winds can quickly make it messy
• Tide: Often works best around mid tide, but this can vary depending on sandbanks and swell size
• Seabed: Sandy, so the peaks can shift after storms

Maceda has a more natural, dune-lined feel compared with some of the more urban beaches near Porto. The setting is scenic, with wide sandy beaches and pine forest nearby. It’s a good place for surf trips if you want a less city-focused atmosphere.
