Aguçadoura

Aguçadoura, Portugal (North of Porto) is a long, open Atlantic beach break on the north coast, known for being exposed, consistent, and often powerful. It sits in a fairly raw coastal stretch, so it picks up plenty of swell and can offer waves when many more sheltered spots are flat.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly beach break, sometimes with shifting peaks and sandbars
• Swell exposure: Very good — it catches north and northwest Atlantic swell well
• Wind: Typically prefers light offshore easterly winds; strong onshore westerlies can make it messy
• Best season: Autumn through winter for the most consistent and larger surf, though it can work year-round
• Wave quality: Can be fun and punchy, but conditions change with tides and sand movement

Conditions and character

Aguçadoura often has a wilder, more rugged feel than some of the more famous surf towns nearby. Because it’s an open beach, the surf can range from clean, playful peaks to heavy, fast, and hollow sections when the sandbanks line up. It’s not as “always perfect” as a point break, but it can surprise with very good sessions after storms and good swell direction.

• Strong currents and rips, especially on bigger swells
• Powerful shorebreak at times
