Praia do Osso da Baleia

Praia do Osso da Baleia is a long, open Atlantic beach on Portugal’s central-west coast, in the North Beira area. It’s known for its wide sandy shoreline, natural dune setting, and exposure to consistent ocean swell, which makes it a solid surf spot when conditions line up.

• Best swell: West to northwest swells
• Wind: Offshore or light east/northeast winds are typically best
• Best tide: Often works best around mid tide, but can vary with sandbanks
• Wave quality: Can produce fun, punchy waves and occasionally hollow sections when sandbars are well formed

What it’s like

Because it’s an exposed beach, the surf can change quickly with tides, swell direction, and shifting sandbanks. On smaller days it may be mellow and forgiving; on larger swells it can get powerful and a bit unruly, with strong currents and heavier shorebreak.
