Tamariz

Tamariz is a classic surf and beach spot on the Estoril coast, just west of Lisbon in Central Portugal. It sits right by Praia do Tamariz, next to Estoril train station, making it one of the easiest surf-access beaches from the city.

What it’s like

• Beach type: Sandy beach with some nearby rocky features and harbor protection influence
• Wave character: Typically small to moderate beachbreak waves
• Best for: Beginners to intermediates when conditions are right
• Crowd: Can get busy, especially in summer and on decent swell days because of its easy access
• Setting: Urban/coastal resort vibe, with cafes, promenade, and strong local foot traffic

Surf conditions

• Works best with W to NW swell and light offshore easterly winds
• Because of the beach’s exposure and coastal shape, wave quality can be inconsistent
• On larger swells, it can get powerful and messy, so conditions should be checked carefully

Good to know

• Easy to reach by train from Lisbon
• More of a convenient city surf than a remote, high-performance surf destination
• Also popular for swimming, bodyboarding, and general beach use
