Praia Grande (Portugal, Central Lisboa) is one of the best-known surf beaches in the Sintra–Lisbon area, set on a wide sandy bay backed by cliffs. It’s an exposed Atlantic beach break that can produce powerful, consistent waves, especially when a solid swell runs up the coast.

Surf character

  • Wave type: Beach break
  • Wave quality: Can be very good, with long lines and punchy sections
  • Best conditions: Mid to large swells from the west/northwest with moderate offshore wind
  • Difficulty: Generally intermediate to advanced, depending on swell size and sandbanks

What it’s like

Praia Grande tends to have a more serious, open-ocean feel than sheltered Lisbon-area spots. Waves can be fast and powerful, with enough size and energy to challenge inexperienced surfers. On the right day, it offers fun walls and the potential for longer rides; on bigger days, it can become heavy and more suitable for confident surfers.

Beach and setting

The beach is long and scenic, with plenty of space and dramatic cliffs around the bay. It’s a popular destination for surfers, bodyboarders, and beachgoers, and it’s usually less urban than the city beaches near Lisbon itself.

Good to know

  • Conditions can change quickly with shifting sandbanks.
  • It can get crowded when conditions are good.
  • Strong currents and larger surf are common in bigger swells.
