Guincho

Guincho is one of Portugal’s most iconic surf spots, located just west of Cascais, in the Greater Lisbon area, near the coastal edge of Central Lisbon access routes.

Surf character

• Exposed Atlantic beach break with lots of open sand and strong swell exposure
• Known for powerful waves, especially when Atlantic systems are running
• Can produce fast, hollow sections on the right swell, but is often more about size and strength than easy, mellow waves

Conditions

• Best with W to NW swell
• Works best on E to NE offshore winds
• Often windy and rough, so it’s not usually a beginner-friendly, calm-day spot
• Wave quality can change quickly depending on sandbanks

Skill level

• Intermediate to advanced
• Beginners can surf there on smaller, cleaner days, but the spot is generally more demanding because of:
• strong currents
• shifting peaks
• powerful shorebreak
• cold water and exposed conditions

Vibe and surroundings

• Big, dramatic beach with a wild, natural feel
• Backed by dunes and close to Sintra-Cascais Natural Park
• Popular not just with surfers but also with kitesurfers and windsurfers because of the wind exposure

Practical notes

• Water is cold year-round, so a wetsuit is usually needed
• It can be crowded on good days, especially when nearby Lisbon surfers head west
• Great spot if you want a classic Atlantic beach-break experience near Lisbon
