Matadouro

Matadouro (Ericeira, Central Portugal) is a classic reef break in the Ericeira surf zone, known for powerful, fast waves and a more serious, performance-oriented surf than the easier beach breaks nearby.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Reef break, usually hollow and punchy
• Direction: Best on NW to W swells
• Wind: Handles light offshore easterlies best
• Best tide: Often works best around mid to low tide, depending on swell size
• Skill level: Intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when it’s bigger

Conditions

Matadouro can deliver clean, barreling rights and lefts when the swell lines up. It tends to be shallow and unforgiving, so timing and wave knowledge matter. On smaller days it can be manageable and fun; on bigger swells it becomes heavy, fast, and more challenging.

Atmosphere

• Located in the Ericeira surf reserve area
• Usually less mellow than beginner spots
• Can get crowded, especially when conditions are good
• The vibe is generally a mix of locals, experienced surfers, and visitors
