Praia do amado

Praia do Amado is one of the Algarve’s best-known surf beaches, located on Portugal’s wild Atlantic coast near Carrapateira, in the western Algarve.

What it’s like

• Big, open beach with a scenic backdrop of cliffs and dunes
• Reliable Atlantic swell exposure, making it one of the most consistent surf spots in the region
• Several peaks along the beach, so waves can spread out rather than crowd into one takeoff zone
• Natural, raw setting with a strong “end-of-the-road” feel compared with the busier southern Algarve beaches

• Works best on northwest to west swells
• Can handle a range of tide conditions, though the best conditions depend on the sandbars and swell size
• Offers beach-break waves, usually with lefts and rights
