Burgau

Burgau, Algarve, Portugal is a small, scenic surf spot on the western edge of the Algarve, near Lagos. It’s best known for its pretty fishing village setting, dramatic cliffs, and a beach that can pick up reliable Atlantic swell.

• Wave type: Mostly beach-break with some nearby reef/point influence depending on the sand and conditions.
• Best swell: Works best with west to southwest swell.
• Best wind: East to northeast offshore winds are usually the cleanest.
• Wave quality: Can be fun and surprisingly consistent, but it’s more condition-dependent than the famous bigger Algarve breaks.

What to expect

• Summer: Often smaller and cleaner, with more mellow surf—good for beginners and intermediate surfers when conditions line up.
• Autumn/winter: Bigger, more powerful Atlantic swells can bring better waves, but also stronger currents and more exposure.
• Crowds: Generally less crowded than better-known Algarve surf towns, though local and visiting surfers do show up when it’s firing.
