Boca do rio

Boca do Rio is a scenic surf spot in Portugal’s Algarve, near the western Algarve / Vila do Bispo area. It’s a beach break set in a beautiful natural valley with a river mouth, cliffs, and a very open, exposed coastline—so it gets good Atlantic swell, but conditions can change quickly.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a sand-bottom beach break
• Best swells: Works best with west to southwest Atlantic swell
• Wind: Usually likes offshore easterly winds
• Tide: Can be tide-sensitive, often better at mid tide
• Crowds: Generally less crowded than many better-known Algarve breaks

Conditions

• Can offer fun, clean waves when the swell direction and wind line up.
• Because it’s exposed, it can get powerful and choppy if the swell gets too big or the wind is onshore.
• Shape can be peaky and shifting, so it’s a spot that rewards watching the lineup for a while.

Best for

• Intermediate surfers and above when conditions are on
• Beginners only on small, mellow days, since waves can become punchy and currents can be tricky

• Remote, quiet, and very natural-looking
• Great if you want a surf session with a more wild Algarve feel rather than a busy town beach
