Beliche

Beliche (Praia do Beliche), Algarve, Portugal is one of the classic surf spots in the far southwest of the Algarve, just east of Sagres and not far from Cape St. Vincent. It’s a beautiful cove framed by high cliffs, with a steep staircase down to the beach and a very scenic, rugged feel.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly a beach-break with some reef influence depending on sand movement and swell angle.
• Best swell: Works well with W to NW swells, common in the Atlantic winter season.
• Wind: E to NE offshore winds are ideal, making the waves cleaner and more shaped.
• Skill level: Can suit intermediate to advanced surfers, though on smaller days it can be manageable for improving surfers. On bigger swells it gets powerful and can be demanding.

What it’s like to surf

• The wave quality can vary a lot with the sandbanks, but when it lines up it offers fast, punchy waves that can produce good sections for turns and sometimes barrels on the better days.
• Because it’s somewhat tucked into a cove, it can be a bit more protected than fully exposed open-coast spots, but it still picks up Atlantic energy well.
• Can get crowded, especially in peak surf season and on clean, solid days.

Conditions and atmosphere

• The setting is one of the main attractions: dramatic cliffs, turquoise water on calm days, and golden sand.
• It’s a popular spot not just for surfing but also for photography and beachgoers, so beach access and parking can be busy in summer.
• Like many Algarve spots, conditions can change quickly with tide, swell direction, and wind.

Best time to go

• Autumn to spring is generally the prime surf season in the Algarve.
• Summer can still offer fun smaller surf, but bigger, cleaner surf is more common in the cooler months.
