Vanimo Village Reef

Vanimo Village Reef is a reef break near Vanimo, in the far northwest of Papua New Guinea, close to the Indonesian border. It’s one of the better-known waves in the region and is often surfed from the town area, depending on conditions and access by boat or local transport.

Wave type

• Reef break
• Typically a powerful, hollow right-hander in the right swell direction
• Can also produce sections that are more manageable, but it’s generally a wave best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers

Conditions

• Works best with consistent northwest to southwest swells, depending on the season
• Often surfed in the dry season, when winds and swells are more favorable
• The reef can make the wave fast and shallow, so tide and timing matter a lot

Surf character

• Known for a clean, peeling wall on good days
• Can offer barrel sections when the swell is solid
• Because it’s a reef setup, it can be sharp and unforgiving, especially on low tide

• Vanimo is a remote, tropical coastal town with a laid-back feel
• The surrounding area is lush, warm, and relatively undeveloped compared with many major surf destinations
• Surfing there often feels more like an expedition than a standard surf trip
