Vanimo Reef

Vanimo Reef is one of Papua New Guinea’s best-known surf breaks, located near Vanimo in the Sandaun Province on the country’s northwest coast, close to the border with Indonesia. It’s a tropical reef pass/reef break that can deliver long, clean, powerful waves when the swell lines up.

The reef can create shorter, intense barrels at times, along with open-face sections for turns.

Access and setting

Vanimo is a remote surf destination, so getting there often involves a bit of effort. That remoteness is part of the appeal: lush coastal scenery, fewer surfers, and a more adventurous atmosphere. Accommodation and logistics can be basic compared with major surf hubs, so many visitors plan carefully or go through local surf operators/guides.
