Hellestø/Hellestøstranda is a well-known surf beach on Norway’s southwest coast, near Stavanger in Rogaland. It’s one of the most accessible and popular surf spots in the area, with a long sandy beach and plenty of space to spread out.

What it’s like

  • Beach break: Waves usually break over sand, which makes it more forgiving than reef spots.
  • Best in west/northwest swell: It works best when Atlantic swell lines up with favorable wind.
  • Wind-sensitive: Like many Norwegian spots, conditions can change quickly; offshore or light winds are ideal.
  • All-level friendly: Often surfed by beginners and intermediates, but bigger swells can create stronger, more challenging waves.

Conditions and season

  • Best seasons: Often best in autumn and winter, when storms bring more consistent swell.
  • Summer: Smaller, softer waves, but can still be surfable on the right day.
  • Water temperature: Cold year-round, so a thick wetsuit is essential, especially outside summer.

Atmosphere

  • Popular with local surfers, so it can get busy when conditions are good.
  • Scenic coastal setting with typical Norwegian weather and dramatic skies.
  • Good spot for learning, but respect rip currents and changing surf conditions.
