Freight Trains, Nicaragua is one of the country’s best-known heavy-hitting beach breaks, famous for its powerful, fast, barreling waves. It’s located on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast and is often described as a world-class left-hand point/reef-style wave depending on the exact sand setup and conditions, with a reputation for producing long, hollow rides when the swell is right.

What it’s like

Wave quality: Fast, powerful, and often very hollow
Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
Style: Heavy beachbreak with punchy barrels and steep takeoffs
Crowds: Can get busy when conditions are good, especially because of nearby surf camps and resorts

Who it suits

Freight Trains is not generally considered a beginner-friendly wave. The takeoff can be steep, and the wave has enough power to make mistimed drops and wipeouts serious. It’s better suited to surfers who are comfortable in fast, hollow beachbreaks.

Why it’s famous

The spot earned its name because the wave can come through in powerful, repeated sets like a freight train—fast, loud, and relentless. On the right day, it can produce some of the best barrels in Central America.
