Blaketown wedge

Blaketown Wedge is a punchy West Coast beachbreak near Greymouth on New Zealand’s South Island. It sits on the exposed Tasman Sea coast, so it gets plenty of swell and can turn on quickly when conditions line up. The spot is known for a wedgey, hollow takeoff where waves bounce off the shore/structures and can stand up fast, making it a more powerful and sometimes heavy beachbreak than the average regional spot.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Beachbreak with a wedge effect
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, especially those comfortable in powerful, shallow, fast-breaking surf
• Size: Can work from smaller surf, but really comes alive with solid W/ NW swell
• Shape: Often steep, hollow, and quick, with short but intense rides

Conditions

• Swell: West and northwest swells are the main producers
• Wind: Offshore or light easterly winds are usually best
• Tide: Often best around mid to lower tide, though it can vary depending on sand and swell angle
• Consistency: Fairly consistent thanks to the exposed West Coast location

Hazards

• Can get messy quickly with strong wind or too much swell
• The takeoff can be very abrupt, so it’s not ideal for beginners
