Whatipu

Whatipu, New Zealand (North Island, West Coast Auckland) is a rugged, remote surf spot at the far southwestern edge of the Auckland region, near the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. It’s known for its wild scenery, black-sand beaches, and powerful, exposed West Coast surf.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly beach break, with shifting sandbars
• Best for: Experienced surfers
• Consistency: Can be very good when the swell lines up, but conditions are often fickle and highly tide-dependent
• Wave quality: Fast, hollow, and powerful when it’s on
• Swell exposure: Open to the Tasman Sea, so it picks up plenty of swell
• Hazards: Strong rips, heavy shorebreak, changing sandbars, rocks, and a long walk in/out depending on access

Conditions

Whatipu works best with: - West to southwest swell - Light offshore east to southeast winds - Mid to low tide is often preferred, though this can vary with sand movement

Atmosphere

The spot feels remote and untamed compared with many Auckland breaks. You’ll usually find: - Fewer crowds than more accessible urban beaches - A raw, natural coastline with dramatic cliffs and dune landscapes - A surf session that can feel adventurous and isolated
