Indicators is one of Raglan’s classic surf breaks, located near the entrance to the Raglan Harbour area on the west coast of the North Island. It’s part of the broader Raglan surf zone, famous for its long, peeling left-hand waves and consistent exposure to southwest swells.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mainly a left-hand point/reef break
• Break quality: Can produce fast, clean, long rides when conditions line up
• Best conditions: Typically works best with swell from the southwest/west and offshore easterly or southeast winds
• Skill level: Generally best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, depending on size and shape

Surf character

Indicators tends to offer a more powerful, performance-oriented wave than a beginner-friendly beach break. The wave can be hollow and quick on smaller swells, but on a good day it links into smooth, workable walls with solid sectioning. Like most Raglan waves, it can get crowded when conditions are good.

Setting

Raglan is a laid-back surf town with a strong surf culture, scenic coastline, and volcanic black-sand beaches nearby. Indicators is one of several notable breaks in the area, alongside famous spots like Manu Bay and Whale Bay.
