Karioitahi

Karioitahi is a rugged west coast surf beach on New Zealand’s North Island, about an hour southwest of Auckland. It’s a long, open stretch of black-sand shoreline exposed to the Tasman Sea, so it tends to pick up a lot of swell and can deliver powerful, often shifting waves.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly beach break, with fast, punchy peaks and plenty of closeout sections on bigger days.
• Swell exposure: Very exposed to west and southwest swells.
• Wind: Best with offshore easterly or southeast winds; westerlies can make it messy quickly.
• Bottom: Sand, so sandbanks move around a lot and conditions can change week to week.
• Consistency: Usually one of the more reliable surf options on Auckland’s west coast when swell is present.

• Can be challenging and powerful, especially when the swell gets up.
• Often better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, though there may be friendlier sections on smaller days.
• Because it’s exposed, it can get rough, rippy, and strong, so caution is important.

• Less crowded than many city beaches, but it still attracts locals when conditions are good.
