Karekare

Karekare is a rugged, iconic surf beach on the west coast of Auckland’s North Island, New Zealand. Set against steep cliffs and a wild, black-sand shoreline, it’s a dramatic and scenic spot that feels much more remote than it is.

Surf character - Type: Exposed west coast beach break - Wave quality: Can be excellent when it’s working, with powerful, hollow waves on the right swell - Best on: South to southwest swells with offshore winds from the east - Consistency: Fairly consistent compared with many NZ beaches, but conditions can change quickly - Crowds: Usually lighter than more central Auckland surf beaches, though it can draw a local crew when conditions are good

Conditions and hazards - The beach is known for strong rips and powerful surf, so it’s best for confident surfers. - Sandbars shift a lot, which means the break can change shape from day to day. - Like many west coast spots, it can be rough and unforgiving when the swell gets too big. - The surf zone can be affected by currents, so caution is important.

Atmosphere Karekare is one of the most beautiful surf locations in the region, with a raw, moody landscape, native bush, and towering headlands. It has a classic West Auckland wild-coast feel and is as much about the setting as the surf.
