Titahi Bay

Titahi Bay is a well-known surf spot on the south-west coast of the North Island, New Zealand, just north of Wellington.

• Type: Exposed beach / bay break with sand-bottom waves and some nearby rocky sections
• Wave quality: Can produce fun, fast lefts and rights with good shape when conditions line up
• Best for: Mostly beginners to intermediate surfers, though it can still offer decent waves for more experienced riders on a good day

Conditions

• Swell: Works best with a solid south to southwest swell
• Wind: Generally prefers light offshore or cross-offshore winds; onshore winds can quickly make it messy
• Tide: Tide sensitivity can vary, but the spot often performs best around mid tide
• Exposure: Because it faces into the open coast, it can pick up plenty of swell, but it also gets affected by wind and storm conditions

Hazards / things to know

• Rocks and reef patches can be present in parts of the bay
• Can become crowded when conditions are good, especially close to Wellington
• In bigger surf, strong currents and choppy conditions can make it more challenging
