The Gap

The Gap, New Zealand (North Island, South East Coast) is a relatively exposed surf location on the southeast side of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s known for rocky coastline, strong ocean exposure, and powerful swells, so conditions can be punchy and change quickly.

Surf character

• Wave type: Usually a reef/point-style setup depending on the exact sand and swell angle
• Best swell: Works best with S/SE swell
• Wind: Most favorable in light offshore or west/northwest winds
• Wave size: Can range from small but fun to solid and heavy when a big swell hits

Conditions

• The spot is generally more suited to experienced surfers
• Can be fast, hollow, and powerful on the right tide and swell
• Because of the coastline and exposure, currents and rips can be strong
• Tides may play a big role in rideability

Environment

• Expect a rugged coastal setting with scenic cliffs and open-ocean exposure
• Water is usually cool to cold, especially outside summer, so a wetsuit is typically needed
