Peaks

Peaks is a surf spot on the northwest coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s generally known as a reef/point-style break with waves that can offer good shape and longer rides when the swell and tide line up.

What to expect

• Wave type: Typically a quality left and/or right depending on the exact setup and swell direction.
• Bottom: Usually reef-based, so it can be punchy and more technical than a beachbreak.
• Best conditions: Often works best with a solid swell, clean offshore winds, and the right tide.
• Skill level: Best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, especially because reef spots can be shallow and powerful.

General character

• Can produce clean, lined-up waves on good days.
• Often crowded when firing, since quality reef spots tend to attract local surfers.
• Conditions can change quickly with tide, swell angle, and wind, so checking a local forecast is important.

Because it’s a reef break, watch for: - Shallow sections - Strong rips - Hazardous entry/exit points - Local hazards that may be exposed at lower tide
