Mount Maunganui is a classic New Zealand beach break and one of the country’s most popular surf destinations. It’s located at the base of Mauao, in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, on the North Island—not in Coromandel, though it’s sometimes grouped with upper North Island surf areas.

Type: Mostly beach break with shifting sandbars

What to expect

Mount Maunganui has several surfable stretches along the main beach, and conditions can vary a lot from day to day because the sandbanks shift regularly. Some days it’s a great longboard and beginner-friendly wave; on bigger swells it can become more hollow and challenging.

Notes

Can be affected by strong rips and changing conditions
Water temperature is usually relatively mild compared with southern NZ spots, but a wetsuit is still common depending on season
Nearby breaks in the Bay of Plenty can be good backups when Mount is crowded or not lining up
