Matata is a mellow, relatively uncrowded surf spot on New Zealand’s North Island, offering a laid-back beach break with plenty of room to move. It’s best known for small to moderate swell and clean conditions when the wind lines up, making it a good option for beginners and intermediate surfers. Waves are typically soft and fun rather than heavy, with the beach shape sometimes creating a few playful peaks along the sandbars.

The spot works best in light offshore winds and with medium-period swell from the northeast to east range, though local sand movement can change how it breaks from season to season.
