Maasvlakte

Maasvlakte, Netherlands is a well-known industrial-port surf spot near the mouth of the Maas River by Rotterdam, exposed to the North Sea. It’s one of the more consistent wave options in the Netherlands because it has a relatively open fetch and can pick up swell more reliably than many nearby beaches.

What it’s like

• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, though conditions can vary a lot
• Consistency: Fairly consistent for Dutch standards, especially when NW to W swell arrives
• Wind: Best in light offshore or calm conditions; onshore winds are common and can make it messy

• Wave quality: Can produce fun, punchy beach break waves, sometimes hollow on the right swell

• Tides: Tidal influence is important; certain tides work much better than others
• Crowds: Can get busy when conditions are good, especially with local surfers and kitesurfers nearby

• Cold water much of the year, so a thick wetsuit is usually needed
