Domburg (Netherlands) is one of the best-known surf spots on the Dutch North Sea coast. It’s located on the island of Walcheren in Zeeland, right by a charming seaside town with a long beach break that gets consistent Atlantic swell.

What it’s like

  • Type of break: Mostly beach break
  • Best for: Beginners to advanced surfers, depending on conditions
  • Wave quality: Can be very fun and punchy, especially with the right swell and wind
  • Consistency: One of the more reliable spots in the Netherlands thanks to North Sea exposure

Conditions

  • Swell: Works best with northwest to west swell
  • Wind: Offshore winds are typically from the east / northeast
  • Tide: Often varies by sandbanks, so tide can make a big difference
  • Wave shape: Can range from mellow, forgiving waves to faster, steeper sections

Water and weather

  • Water temperature: Cold for much of the year
  • Wetsuit: Usually a full wetsuit, often 4/3 mm or thicker, and in winter you may want boots, gloves, and hood
  • Crowds: Popular spot, especially on decent swell days and in summer

Atmosphere

Domburg is a classic surf destination with a relaxed beach-town feel. Besides surfing, it’s known for its dunes, wide sandy beach, and easy access to cafés and surf shops.

Good to know

  • Sandbanks shift often, so the best peak can move
  • Can get busy with surfers, bodyboarders, and beachgoers
  • Always check local forecasts for swell direction, wind, and tide
