Guns is one of Namibia’s most famous surf spots, located on the remote and rugged Skeleton Coast north of Swakopmund. It’s a powerful right-hand point break known for its long, fast, hollow waves that can offer excellent rides when conditions line up.
What it’s like
- Wave type: Right-hand point/reef break
- Best size: Works best with solid swell; small days are often less consistent
- Wave quality: Fast, steep, and occasionally barreling
- Rarity: Not a daily surf; it needs the right swell direction, wind, and tide
Setting
The spot sits in a stark desert-and-ocean landscape, with cold Atlantic water, fog, and very little development nearby. It’s part of what makes surfing there so memorable: you’re surfing in a wild, isolated environment with a strong feeling of remoteness.
Conditions and challenges
- Cold water: A wetsuit is usually necessary
- Wind: Offshore winds can improve shape, but the area is often windy
- Hazards: Strong currents, shallow sections, and powerful waves
- Access: Remote and not beginner-friendly
Who it suits
Guns is best for experienced surfers comfortable with heavy, fast waves and isolated conditions. It’s not ideal for beginners due to the power of the break and the remoteness of the location.
