Umatac Bay

Umatac Bay, on Guam’s southwest coast, is a scenic surf spot set inside a broad, protected bay with a dramatic backdrop of lush hills and historical shoreline. It’s less of a classic heavy reef break and more of a mellow, tropical Pacific wave zone, often shaped by incoming southwest swells and local wind conditions.

What it’s like

• Setting: Calm, picturesque bay with warm turquoise water, palm-lined coast, and a quiet village atmosphere.
• Wave character: Usually softer and more approachable than Guam’s more exposed outer reef breaks, though conditions can still get punchy when swell lines up.
• Best for: Intermediate surfers looking for a relaxed island session, and more advanced surfers when the swell is clean and properly oriented.
• Conditions: Can be highly tide- and wind-dependent. Offshore or light winds can make it much better; onshore trade winds can quickly reduce quality.
• Hazards: Like many Guam surf areas, watch for reef shallows, variable currents, and occasional sharp coral.
