P-Pass (often called Pohnpei Pass) is one of the most famous waves in Micronesia and a world-class reef break located off Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.

Spot description

P-Pass is a powerful, fast-breaking left-hand reef pass that runs along a deep-water channel through the outer reef. It’s known for producing long, hollow, highly barreling waves that can handle serious size when the swell is solid. Because the wave refracts through the pass, it can be incredibly consistent and offer a long, makeable wall with heavy sections.

Wave type

  • Reef break / pass
  • Predominantly left-hand
  • Can get very hollow and fast
  • Best suited for experienced surfers

Conditions

  • Works best with west to northwest swell
  • Typically likes light to moderate offshore winds
  • Tides can have a big effect on shape and safety
  • At smaller sizes it can be playful and fun; at larger swells it becomes a heavy, high-performance barrel

Hazards

  • Sharp coral reef
  • Strong currents through the pass
  • Powerful waves with little margin for error
  • Remote location and limited rescue support

Best for

  • Advanced to expert surfers
  • Barrel hunters
  • Surfers comfortable in heavy reef environments

Why it’s famous

P-Pass is legendary for its combination of quality, consistency, and power. In the right conditions, it delivers one of the most memorable waves in the Pacific: long, throaty, and perfectly lined up over a deep coral reef.
