Chacmool

Chacmool is a surf break in the Cancún / Quintana Roo area on Mexico’s Caribbean coast—not the Gulf of Mexico in the strict geographic sense, though people sometimes loosely refer to the wider region. It’s known more as a windswell and hurricane-swell spot than a classic high-consistency point break.

What it’s like

Chacmool can produce clean, short-period waves with a quick takeoff and steep face, especially during the right swell window. When it’s working, it can offer fun rights and lefts, but it’s not known for being as reliable as better-known mainland Mexico surf destinations. It can also be affected by storm activity, currents, and changing sandbars.

• Summer to early fall: Often the best chance due to Caribbean storms and tropical systems
• Winter: Can still get waves from north and northeast swells, but conditions may be smaller or wind-affected
