Costa Azul

Costa Azul is one of the most famous surf breaks in Baja California Sur, Mexico, located just south of San José del Cabo on the Sea of Cortez side, near the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula.

What it’s like

• Type of break: Mostly a beach break / reefy beach break with multiple peaks.
• Wave quality: Can be very fun and punchy, especially when a south or southwest swell lines up.
• Best for: Beginner to advanced surfers, depending on the day and which section is breaking.
• Crowds: Often crowded, especially when conditions are good, because it’s one of the most accessible and well-known breaks in the area.

• Swell direction: Works best with S/SW swell.
• Wind: Usually wants light offshore or calm morning winds; like much of Baja, afternoons can get breezier.
• Tide: Can work across a range of tides, but the best tide depends on the sandbars and any exposed rock/reef. Mid tide is often a good starting point.
• Wave shape: Can offer fast, hollow sections when it’s bigger, but on smaller days it may be softer and more beginner-friendly.
