Grand Rivière Slab.

Grand Rivière Slab is a powerful, heavy reef break on the far north coast of Martinique, near the remote fishing village of Grand'Rivière. It’s one of the island’s more serious surf spots and is known for fast, hollow, ledgey waves breaking over a shallow volcanic reef and rock bottom.

Surf character

When it’s working, Grand Rivière Slab can produce short, intense, critical barrels with a lot of water moving over a shallow platform. It’s not a mellow wave; the takeoff can be steep and unforgiving, and wipeouts can be punishing. Because of the exposed location and the power of the swell funneling into the north coast, it can hold serious size and deliver a truly heavy Caribbean wave.

Access and setting

The spot sits in a remote, scenic, rainforest-backed area, giving it a rugged, undeveloped feel. Getting there is part of the adventure: roads on the north coast can be narrow and winding, and conditions can change quickly. The isolation means there are usually fewer crowds than at more accessible breaks.
