BASSE POINTE LE CHAUDRON

Basse Pointe – Le Chaudron is a surf spot on the Atlantic coast of northern Martinique, near Basse-Pointe at the foot of Montagne Pelée. It’s one of the island’s more exposed, powerful setups, so it tends to deliver more energy than the gentler bays on the Caribbean side.

Spot character

• Exposure: Open to Atlantic swell, so it works best when there’s enough north to northeast swell running.
• Wave type: Often a fast, punchy reef break with a powerful takeoff.
• Shape: Can offer short, hollow sections when conditions align, but it’s not usually a mellow longboard wave.
• Crowd: Generally less crowded than the well-known south/west coast spots, though conditions and local knowledge matter a lot.

Conditions

• Best swell direction: Typically N / NE / E swells.
• Best wind: Usually light offshore or cross-offshore trade winds depending on the exact orientation that day.
• Tide: Can be tide-sensitive; the reef can work very differently from mid to low tide.
• Skill level: Best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, especially because of the reef, power, and local currents.

Hazards

• Reef: The bottom is shallow and coral/reef-related, so wipeouts can be unforgiving.
• Currents: Atlantic exposure can create strong movement in the water.
