Tombstones

Tombstones, Maldives is a well-known reef break in the North Malé Atoll, famous for its fast, hollow right-hand wave and heavy, barreling sections over shallow coral reef. It’s a classic Maldivian wave: tropical, scenic, and powerful, with clear water and warm conditions.

Conditions and character

Tombstones can be a fun, groomed right on smaller swells, but when the swell gets bigger it turns heavy and more challenging, with sections that can throw hard and require precise positioning. It’s not usually a beginner wave due to the reef and power of the takeoff.

Access and setting

Like many breaks in the Maldives, Tombstones is often accessed by boat and is influenced by nearby channels, lagoons, and local wind/swell patterns. The setting is typically stunning—turquoise water, palm-fringed islands, and a tropical reef environment.

Surfing considerations

• Tide: Can change the shape and safety significantly; mid-tides are often preferred depending on swell size.
