Blue Bowls, Maldives is a famous left-hand reef break in the North Malé Atoll, best known for producing long, fast, hollow waves over a shallow coral reef. It’s one of the Maldives’ classic surf spots and is often worked into surf charter itineraries along with nearby breaks like Chickens and Cokes.

What it’s like

Wave type: A powerful left reef break
Shape: Fast, steep takeoff with a clean wall and occasional barrel sections
Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, especially those comfortable surfing reefs
Water type: Warm, clear, tropical water with vibrant blue lagoon conditions

Conditions

Best swell direction: Typically south to southwest swell
Best wind: Northeast winds tend to make it cleaner
Tide: Can work on different tides, but many surfers prefer a mid tide for better shape and less risk on the reef
Consistency: More consistent during the main swell season, generally around the southern hemisphere winter months

Hazards

Shallow reef: The main concern is the exposed coral reef, especially at low tide
