Kota Belud

Kota Belud, on the west coast of Sabah in Borneo, is a lesser-known surf destination in Malaysia that can deliver fun tropical waves in the right season. It’s not as consistent or developed as some more famous Asian surf spots, but that’s part of its appeal: quiet beaches, warm water, scenic island-and-mountain backdrops, and a relatively uncrowded lineup.

Surf character

• Type of waves: Mostly beachbreaks and some shallow reef/rocky sections depending on the exact stretch of coast.
• Best conditions: It works best when the north-east monsoon brings swell, typically around November to March.
• Wave quality: Can range from small, soft, beginner-friendly waves to fun, faster sections when the swell is up.
• Consistency: Variable. You need the right swell direction, tide, and wind to get it good.

Environment

• Water: Warm year-round, so a rash guard or thin springsuit is usually enough.
• Crowds: Generally low compared with more established surf areas.
• Setting: Tropical coastline with views of Mount Kinabalu inland on clear days, plus nearby fishing villages and mangroves in some areas.

Who it suits

• Beginners: Good when swell is small and clean.
• Intermediate surfers: Best chance of having fun, especially on more active swells.
• Advanced surfers: Might enjoy it for exploration and the occasional quality session, but it’s not a world-class heavy-wave destination.

• Local knowledge helps a lot because access, sandbars, and conditions can change.
• Watch for reefs, rocks, and currents in certain areas.
• Facilities are limited compared to major surf towns, so plan transport, accommodation, and board repairs in advance.
