Ribeira da Janela

Ribeira da Janela is one of Madeira’s most iconic and visually dramatic surf spots, set on the island’s rugged north coast near Porto Moniz. It’s famous not only for the surf, but also for its striking volcanic scenery, with steep cliffs, black sand and rock, and the dramatic offshore sea stacks that make the place instantly recognizable.

Surf conditions

• Wave type: Powerful, fast, and usually hollow reef break / point-style waves depending on the swell and exact section
• Best swell direction: Typically works best with north to northwest swells
• Wind: East to southeast winds are generally cleaner here
• Wave quality: Can be excellent on the right swell, but it’s highly exposed and can get very heavy and challenging

Skill level

This is generally considered an advanced spot. The waves can be strong, the takeoff can be critical, and the reef/rocky conditions mean it’s not ideal for beginners. Local knowledge is very useful.

Best time to surf

Madeira’s north coast tends to be most consistent in the autumn and winter months, when Atlantic swells are more frequent and powerful.

Atmosphere

Ribeira da Janela is as much about the landscape as the surf. Even on smaller days, it’s one of the most scenic surf locations in Madeira, with a wild, remote feel and impressive natural features around the lineup.
