Molas

Molas (Lithuania) is a surf spot on the Baltic Sea coast, near Klaipėda, at the entrance to the harbor jetties. It’s one of the better-known Lithuanian wave spots, but it’s very dependent on wind, swell, and storms, so conditions can change fast.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly wind swell / storm swell rather than consistent ocean groundswell.
• Best conditions: Typically works best with westerly to northwesterly winds and enough swell to wrap into the jetties.
• Wave quality: Can produce clean, fun peaks on the right day, but often it’s choppy and raw.
• Crowd: Usually a local-heavy spot, with crowds increasing when a good swell hits.

Spot characteristics

• Location: Near the moles/jetties at Klaipėda harbor.
• Bottom: Mostly sand, though the jetty area means you should be cautious of rocks and strong currents.
• Hazards:
• Strong currents around the harbor entrance
• Cold water for much of the year
• Shifting sandbanks
• Potential ship traffic nearby

Best season

• Autumn and winter often bring the most reliable surfable conditions.
• Summer can work, but waves are generally smaller and less consistent.

Gear notes

• A thick wetsuit is usually necessary outside of peak summer, often with boots, gloves, and hood in colder months.
• Because the Baltic can be unforgiving, good cold-water preparation is important.
