Palmu Līcis is a surf spot on Latvia’s Baltic coast, best known as a windswell and storm-swell beach break rather than a classic tropical surf destination. Like much of Latvia, it’s highly seasonal and weather-dependent: when the Baltic is calm, it’s flat; when strong low-pressure systems move through, it can produce fun, fast waves.

What it’s like

  • Type: Beach break
  • Wave quality: Can be clean and playful with the right swell and wind, but often fickle
  • Best conditions: Offshore or light winds, with a solid Baltic swell
  • Wave size: Usually small to moderate, though storms can make it much bigger
  • Crowds: Generally low compared with major surf regions

Best time to surf

  • Autumn and winter are typically the most reliable for swell.
  • Late summer can occasionally offer rideable conditions, but consistency is limited.
  • Water is cold much of the year, so a thick wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood are often needed outside peak summer.

Local character

Palmu Līcis has more of a wild, cold-water, north-European surf feel than a warm-water surf scene. Sessions can be very atmospheric, with shifting sandbanks, cold air, and strong Baltic weather patterns shaping the surf.

Practical notes

  • Check wind direction, swell forecast, and sandbar conditions before going.
  • Conditions can change quickly.
  • It may be better suited to experienced surfers comfortable in cold water and variable surf.
