Nagahama Reef

Nagahama Reef (Tanegashima Island, Kyushu, Japan) is a reef break on the northwestern side of Tanegashima, an island off the southern coast of Kyushu. It’s known for producing clean, punchy waves when ocean swell lines up with the reef and local wind conditions cooperate.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Reef break
• Best on: Swells with some size and a favorable tide
• Wave quality: Can be very good, offering fast sections and the potential for longer rides when conditions are right
• Character: More of a performance spot than a mellow longboard wave; the reef can make the takeoff critical and the wave sectioning depends on tide and swell angle

• Tide: Usually more sensitive to tide than beach breaks; timing matters a lot
• Swell: Works best with consistent Pacific swell entering from the south or southeast, depending on the setup
