Shichirigahama

Shichirigahama is a scenic beach-and-coast surf spot on Japan’s Pacific side, in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. It’s not in Chiba, though—Kanagawa and Chiba are separate prefectures. Shichirigahama is known more for its beautiful coastline, views of Enoshima and Mount Fuji on clear days, and relaxed surf culture than for heavy, world-class waves.

Surf conditions

• Wave type: Beachbreak with occasional more organized sections
• Size: Usually small to medium, though it can handle bigger swells at times
• Best on: South and southwest swell directions
• Wind: Offshore winds from the north or northeast often clean things up
• Tide: Can be sensitive to tide changes; conditions vary by sandbar

What it’s like

• Good for intermediate surfers, but beginners can find rideable waves on smaller days
• Can get crowded, especially on weekends and during good swell
• The wave quality depends a lot on sand movement, so the break can change over time
• Strong local beach atmosphere, with lots of walkers, photographers, and coastal sightseeing visitors

Best season

• Summer to early autumn: smaller, more manageable waves for most surfers
• Autumn to winter: more consistent swell and cleaner conditions, but often bigger and more demanding

• Watch for shorebreak, rip currents, and crowded lineups
• Respect local surf etiquette and beach rules
• It’s a very photogenic spot, so surfing here can feel as much about the scenery as the waves
