Jogashima is a scenic surf area on the southeastern tip of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture, near the border with Chiba Bay area. It’s better known for its rugged coastline, fishing atmosphere, and views of the Pacific than for being a classic world-famous surf destination, but it can offer fun waves when conditions line up.
Surf character
- Wave type: Mostly beachbreak and some rocky/coastal setups depending on the exact section.
- Best swell: Usually benefits from south to southeast swell, with typhoon season often producing the best waves.
- Wind: Northwest/offshore winds are generally favorable.
- Consistency: Can be inconsistent, so it’s more of a check-the-forecast spot than an everyday reliable wave.
Conditions
- Wave quality: Can range from weak and crumbly to surprisingly clean and punchy during a good swell.
- Crowds: Not usually as crowded as major famous surf towns, but access and local conditions can concentrate surfers in the best sections.
- Hazards: Since it’s a rocky coastal area in places, be mindful of reefs, rocks, currents, and changing tides.
Atmosphere
- Very scenic and relaxed, with dramatic ocean views, local seafood spots, and a more laid-back feel than heavily commercial surf beaches.
- Good for surfers who enjoy a low-key coastal experience and are comfortable with reading the conditions carefully.
Good for
- Intermediate surfers looking for a less crowded option
- Experienced surfers chasing typhoon swell
- Surfers who like scenic surf trips and coastal exploration
