Awaiura is one of the better-known surf breaks on Niijima, an island in the Izu archipelago south of Tokyo. It’s a scenic, relatively exposed beach break with a reputation for producing some of the best waves in the area when swell lines up correctly.

• Wave quality: Can be very good on the right swell
• Best direction: Generally handles southerly to southeasterly swell best, depending on sandbars and conditions
• Wind: Offshore winds are typically from the north to northwest
• Skill level: Best for intermediate to advanced surfers when it’s firing; smaller days can be manageable for beginners, but currents and power can increase quickly

Conditions and season

• The spot tends to work best during typhoon season and when Pacific swells reach the Izu Islands.
• Winter can also bring cleaner, more organized surf, though size and consistency vary.
• Because it’s a beach break, the wave shape can change with shifting sandbars, so the quality is often seasonal and tide-dependent.

What to expect

• A fairly open, exposed beach with scenic surroundings and a more laid-back island atmosphere than mainland Japan.
• On the right day, you can expect fast, punchy waves with some hollow sections.
• It’s not usually as crowded as major mainland surf spots, but conditions can still attract local and traveling surfers when the surf is good.
