Morghella (Morghella, Sicily, Italy) is a scenic south-coast surf spot near Portopalo di Capo Passero in southeastern Sicily. It’s a Mediterranean beach-break / reef-influenced break that tends to work best when a good swell lines up with the right wind, since Sicily can be very fickle.

What it’s like

Type: Mostly a beach break with some reef/rock influence depending on the section
Wave quality: Can be fun and punchy when conditions are right, but it’s inconsistent
Best size: Typically small to medium swells; bigger swells can get powerful and messy
Bottom: Sand with areas of rock/reef, so be aware of hazards
Crowd: Usually not very crowded compared with mainland European surf destinations

Best conditions

Swell direction: Works best with south to southeast swell (common for Sicily’s exposed south coast)
Wind: Light offshore or light cross-offshore is ideal; strong wind can quickly ruin it
Tide: As with many Mediterranean beach breaks, it can change a lot—mid tide often gives the most manageable shape

Water temperature: Warm in summer, cooler in winter but generally milder than Atlantic Europe
